Description This statue of a Greek sage seemingly emerges from the woods at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. The cemetery was built in the mid-19th century, becoming the first 'park-like' cemetery in the country. This landscape is located not too far from downtown Boston. During its early existence, it served society as a retreat from the industrialization of urban America. In fact, it was one of the first strolling parks where people often went to picnic as a family weekend outing. Today, it serves as contemplative place like many cemeteries, but it also attracts the bird-watching community. The garden quality of the landscape is enhanced by the labeling of nearly all plants with the common and scientific name, thus making it a destination for those studying horticulture.
Brian Rojo, Arlington, MA. Member Since March 2011 Artist Statement I'm a landscape architect with a curious eye for finding beauty and meaning in unexpected places. My portfolio contains many subjects, with an emphasis on landscape and architectural photography. I worked as a landscape architect for many years until I became disabled with a genetic disorder. As a result, I'm using photography as a means of expression, replacing the artistic sensibilities that I once found in my profession of designing landscapes and gardens. My aim is to seek out strong compositions and unique viewpoints of familiar and unfamiliar subjects. My interests range from rural to urban landscape, from modern to historic architecture, from plants to vernacular objects, from a sense of place to a sense of wonder. Ultimately, I hope to encourage others to find the beauty in their environment, and to be curious of the unfamiliar.
